Wheel Chock Safety at the Loading Dock

According to Industrial Safety & Hygiene News, more than 25% of industrial accidents happen at the loading dock, and for each accident, there are 600 near misses. Those statistics are sobering and indicate the need for proper safety training and loading dock safety products.

Wheel chocks are a very basic but effective wedge-shaped safety product that can be placed behind a trailer’s wheels to prevent movement. How To Use Wheel Chocks

Check that the parking brake is set
Always use wheel chocks in pairs
Place wheel chocks on the left and right wheels closest to the loading dock
Use the right size chocks for the tire and center them against the wheel
Communicate with loading or unloading crew once the chocks have been securely placed

Proper placement of wheel chocks is critical. Chocks should be placed against both rear wheels on the side furthest from the loading dock. As a lift truck drives onto the trailer, the chocks will hold the trailer against the loading dock preventing trailer creep and potential accidents.

When To Use Wheel Chocks

Wheel chocks should be used to secure trailers during every single loading and unloading procedure. They take very little time to put in place and it’s a safety measure that should never be skipped.
